TITLE SEQUENCE

  • Films use a title sequences as a way of credits that appear in the beginning of the film and usually at the end as well.
  • This is used to show the audience who is acting in the film, the team behind the film and who has made it (owners).
  • It can give information about the film we are about to watch. The aim of the title sequence is     to establish a genre, mood, a character,  setting or atmosphere.

Below is my sheet that i've done in lesson about "What is  a title sequence? "

What is a Title Sequence?

A title sequence is a method used to present:

  • important members of the production,
  • cast members,
  • the director's name,
  • the movie title
  • the company's name

This is usually presented at the beginning of a movie and superimposed as a blank screen or static picture. In most cases it is also accompanied by music.

The importance of a title sequence:
It helps the audience to understand what the film is going to be about because it highlights the important elements in the film.
By watching interesting title sequences the audience will have many unanswered questions which they can only find out from watching the rest of the movie; increases the distributors income.

Genre and Sub-Genre

Summary of the title sequence in High School drama title:-

The high school drama title we looked at was Mean Girls, it is a well known film that many teenager know. Firstly the film, started off with displaying the production company name and then followed by the main characters name (Lindsey Lohan) and then the name of the film. This then followed with a scene from the film and then whilst the film was playing the names of the other cast moved across the screen. The font of the names was bold and the colours of the first name was different from the last name, making the name stand out in already playing film. This film is mostly comedy and of course fiction as nearly all films.

Summary of the title sequence for Youth drama film:-

In this youth drama film, the titles started of with the production company and then followed by the films sponsors, listed one by one, this was displayed on a black screen. The titles font was bold but much simpler than the other title sequence we looked at. The genre of the film is a mixture of horror and comedy, which is a very popular genre for teenagers. In this film the cast are mostly shown at the end of the film during the credits because it is a youth film, which means most of the actors are not well-known as Mean Girls.

Differences between both sequences:-

There was some similarities and differences of both films title sequences. One similarity is that both had bold fonts for the titles, this was important especially because the title sequence for Attack the block was behind a black screen which meant the font of the title sequence will make it stand out. However, the title sequence in Mean Girls had different colours, for the first name a range of oranges or yellows and a different colour for the last name like white or pink.
another difference between both film sequences were, in Attack the Block the titles were displayed on a black screen and then the film followed. Whereas, in Mean Girls the titles were showing during the beginning of the film, sliding in from one side. Both films have comedy, but a difference is Attack the Block is also a horror which is very popular with young adults.

Task 1 : Audience

 - What is an audience?
An audience is an individual or a collection of people that are watching/observing/consuming a product, such as a film or a television program.

 - How do we define target audience?

The primary group of people that something, usually an advertising campaign, is aimed at appealing to.

 - Why is it useful for a film to have a target audience?
It is important because they determine the content of your film. You need to have a good demographics in order to be able to have a good content to appeal to the specific audience and then also when it comes to the stage to market the product effectively. The target audience can be called the base of the film.

- Which audiences to you think teen dramas appeal to ?

In my opinion teen dramas appeal to are obviously teenagers/young adults around 16-25 years old. It appeals to both genders because it addresses  themes that teenagers can relate to which makes them engage into the film.
Most of them are studying in school, college or university .
Their interests are probably go out with their friends, perhaps go shopping, do at least a kind of sport e.g. Football volleyball, draw, watch movies, use the internet
In terms of personality they may be funny, kind, clever, loving, moody sentimental, withdrawn, lazy, outgoing and perhaps understanding.
Their general interest are : sex and relationships, people and celebrities, video games.

Title Sequence

                                         Title Sequence:

A title sequence is when titles like, key production, cast members are presented using different visuals and sounds at the beginning of the film.
It usually then follows with the opening credits, which are generally nothing more than a series of superimposed text.
A good title sequence dictates seamlessly into the film and it sets an expectation.

The interview with Kyle Cooper:-
In this interview Cooper described what makes a title sequence and how he was inspired by other work to create title sequences that made the film stand out at the beginning, before the film even starts playing. Kyle Cooper has been recognised for his 'Seven' title sequence. He was the man who single-handedly revitalised the main title sequence as a art form.
